How to tell if a job advert offers visa sponsorship

Reading adverts carefully saves weeks. Here is how to separate a genuine offer of visa support from wishful thinking.

Clear positive wording

Look for direct statements in the job description itself.

  • 'Visa sponsorship is available for this role'
  • 'We can support work permit applications'
  • 'Applications from candidates abroad are welcome'
  • 'Relocation package and visa support provided'

Clear refusals

Some adverts rule out sponsorship. Respect these — applying anyway rarely works and can harm future applications to the same employer.

  • 'Candidates must already have the right to work'
  • 'We are unable to offer sponsorship'
  • 'Local candidates only'

Uncertain wording

Phrases like 'sponsorship may be considered' or 'for exceptional candidates' are possibilities, not offers. Treat them as worth a question, not a guarantee.

When the advert is silent

Many employers that sponsor never mention it. If the employer appears in official sponsor evidence and your occupation qualifies, a tailored application is still reasonable. On SponsorPath, adverts with explicit wording carry a 'Visa support stated in advert' label.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ask about sponsorship before applying?

If the advert is silent, a short, polite question to the recruiter is fine. Keep it specific to the role.

Does 'relocation support' mean visa sponsorship?

Not always. Relocation help can cover moving costs only. Look for explicit visa or permit wording.
